Seasonal bedload pulses in a small alpine catchment

نویسندگان

چکیده

Natural fluctuations of bedload transport under steady hydraulic conditions have been often attributed to the propagation sediment pulses in river channels, leading hysteretic patterns rating curves at both hydrograph and seasonal timescales. However, direct field observations pulse effect on rates rarely reported. Two datasets recorded a small Mediterranean badland catchment Southern French Prealps (Moulin Ravine Draix) are used here investigate originating from hillslopes response flow conditions. The first dataset comes long-term erosion monitoring program providing time-integrated yields since late 1980s by means large trap. second is based slot sampler fluxes 1-min time resolution autumn 2011. Sediment tracked with regular scour chain surveys along alluvial channel upstream station. Both revealed counterclockwise hysteresis which can be yearly reaching outlet during early winter. We believe that these could typical alpine catchments active gully bedrock sensitive frost-cracking processes.

Bedload transport in the instrumented catchment of the Rio Cordon Part II: Analysis of the bedload rate

Sediment transport is monitored by a specially designed instrumentation installed on a steep Ž . mountain streams the Rio Cordon . The variability of bedload rate and yield reflects the Ž . variability in flow discharge. Bedload and flow data for ‘ordinary’ low peak flow floods and ‘exceptional’ sediment transport events are used to test the range of application of the bedload equations propose...

Seasonal changes in the character and nitrogen content of dissolved organic matter in an alpine/subalpine headwater catchment.

We are studying the chemical quality of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) in a high-elevation watershed in the Colorado Front Range. Samples were collected over the 2000 snowmelt runoff season at two sites across an alpine/subalpine ecotone to understand how the transition between the lightly vegetated alpine and forested reaches of the catchment influences the chemical character of DON. Samples...

Chlorine Transport in a Small Catchment

It is generally known that chlorine compounds are ubiquitous in the environment. In recent years, researchers have concluded that chlorine is part of a biogeochemical cycle in soil involving an interaction between chloride (Clin) and organic-matter-bound chlorine (Clorg). Even though there is indisputable evidence that Clorg is formed naturally, there are actually few simultaneous field measure...

Seasonal recharge and mean residence times of soil and epikarst water in a small karst catchment of southwest China

Soil and epikarst play an important role in the hydrological cycle in karst regions. This paper focuses on investigating the seasonal recharge and mean residence time (MRT) of soil water and epikarst water in a small karst catchment of southwest China. The deuterium contents in precipitation, creek, soil baseflow (direct recharge of the saturated soil water to the stream), epikarst spring, and ...

Surficial redistribution of fallout ¹³¹iodine in a small temperate catchment.

Isotopes of iodine play significant environmental roles, including a limiting micronutrient ((127)I), an acute radiotoxin ((131)I), and a geochemical tracer ((129)I). But the cycling of iodine through terrestrial ecosystems is poorly understood, due to its complex environmental chemistry and low natural abundance. To better understand iodine transport and fate in a terrestrial ecosystem, we tra...
